The city which was founded in year 1537 later became a cantonment area in 1809 during British rule. The climate mainly due to the high altitude (3000 feet above sea level) was the primary reason. Many of the street names (Infantry Road, Brigade Road etc.) owe their name to this cantonment heritage.
After British rule, the city became the “Pensioners paradise” due to the pleasant climate and the easy lifestyle here.
Later towards 1990s, Bangalore became the hub for major international Information technology(IT) companies in Inida. This IT boom resulted in a tremendous growth and currently the city is home to around 11 million people. IT growth has led to Bangalore being one of the most (if not the most) cosmopolitan cities in India. Now one can find people from all over the country and expats from around the world working here.
