Coimbatore was part of Chera kingdom during the first few centuries of common era. It was later part of the kingdom of Mysore before British took over the city. The city got municipality in year 1866 and became an integral part of Madras residency under the British.

The city is a major hub for textile industry, manufacturing and poultry farming. Coimbatore got the name  “Manchester of South India” due to the presence of the textile industry in the region.  It is also a major education hub with the city boasting of several professional colleges offering courses in engineering, medicine and management.
