What is Obesity?
A person is obese when there is too much body fat in the body. The main causes of obesity are overeating, eating food which has high-fat content, genetic and being physically inactive.
Obesity Treatment Options
Treatment for obesity in modern medicine is typically around weight loss surgeries. These surgeries include gastric bypass surgery, gastric band surgery, and sleeve gastrectomy. Though these surgeries aid weight loss quickly, however, has a risk associated with it. The risks include injuries due to surgeries, blood clots, infections etc.
Ayurveda, a traditional Indian medicine system (existing for more than 5000 years in India), has specific Ayurvedic treatment for obesity. These treatments are non-invasive (meaning no surgery or incisions) and are based on therapies and herbal medicine which has minimal side effects.
Obesity Ayurvedic approach
The fundamental principle of Ayurveda is that the constitution of a person has three doshas- Vata which governs the air flow within the body, Pitta which governs the metabolism/digestion and Kapha which takes care of lubrication and nourishment. Any imbalance in the proportion of these doshas will result in diseases.
Ayurveda views Obesity as a Kapha aggravated disorder. Unhealthy food habits and poor lifestyle impacts metabolism and gives rise to aggravated Kapha which gets accumulated in body channels. The accumulated Kapha becomes heavy and becomes fat tissues. This accumulation also leads to blocking of channels affecting the flow of energy within the body. This, in turn, activates the digestive fire in the stomach which causes the craving for more food resulting in overeating.
Ayurvedic treatment for Obesity
Obesity treatment in Ayurveda is based on purification/cleansing of the body. The objective is to correct the metabolism system in the body thus providing a long-term and sustainable relief to obesity.
The main treatments include purgation therapies which include oil and decoction enemas, dry fomentation (application of hot medicine bag over the body), powder and oil massages and steam baths.
Ayurveda doctor will also prescribe a customized diet plan for the patient based on the individual’s body constitution. There may also be meditation and yoga exercises prescribed for the patient.
Ayurvedic treatment cost for Obesity
Ayurvedic treatment cost for Obesity would typically be between 1,300 to 4,000 USD.
The main factors determining the cost are the duration of the treatment and the hospital facilities/amenities. Treatment duration will typically be 21-28 days to start with, however, the doctor would determine the treatment period based on the condition of the patient.
In some cases, the treatment may have to be repeated periodically (half-yearly, yearly, once in 2 years etc.) based on the patient condition.
Note: The room type and the amenities in the hospital are a major factor in determining the cost. For example, the cost ranges from 1300 to 3000 USD for the same treatment duration across different hospitals and room types.
