Yes, ACL reconstruction surgery is a major operation.
There will be expert orthopedic surgeons for the surgery. You will be safe with them. You will sleep through the operation as you will be under general anesthesia. The surgeon will remove your torn ACL and replace it with a graft. The surgeon then fixes the graft tissue into the tibia and femur ends and fastens them using screw or staples.
It depends on the level of the tear.
In many cases, physiotherapy can help in avoiding surgery. However, if the tear is complete, then surgery is the only option. Your doctor is the best person to advise you on the treatment plan.
The total hospital stay will be around 6-8 days.
You will be in the hospital the day before the surgery for pre-operation tests and evaluations. After the surgery, you will be in the hospital for 5-7 days. You will be using crutches to walk around the hospital room. After about ten days, you can walk again without any support.
